What a sober companion actually does
A sober companion is not a sponsor, a security guard, or a therapist — though the role draws from each. The companion is a steady, professional presence who walks alongside a client through environments where recovery is fragile: a film set, a black-tie gala, a transatlantic flight, a difficult family dinner, the first thirty days after discharge.
Day to day, this means anticipating triggers before they arrive, holding space for difficult conversations, coordinating quietly with treatment teams and family, and — when needed — making the unobtrusive call that keeps a small moment from becoming a relapse. The work is part recovery coaching, part private safeguard, and entirely confidential.
